Volunteering
with Us

Thank you for considering volunteering with Barnardo’s!

Without volunteers, Barnardo’s would not be able to provide information and support to new mothers to assist them and their babies/children within their breastfeeding relationships; an absolutely vital service in the South Gloucestershire area. We have 2 types of volunteers - group helpers and breastfeeding peer supporters.

Group helpers welcome families, make refreshments and help with setting up and clearing down.

Please for more information and to apply, please click here

Breastfeeding peer supporters provide breastfeeding specific information and support.

To find out if we are currently recruiting for peer support volunteers, search 'South Gloucestershire' on our volunteering opportunities website

Training as a Barnardo's Breastfeeding Peer Supporter

Training is usually held over a number of weeks with both online and face to face sessions.

Applicants will attend an online interview and be subject to an enhanced DBS check and two satisfactory references will have to be received

Training will include some pre-work and homework although written work is minimal

Online volunteer e-learning is in addition and is mandatory as is a separate safeguarding training session. Volunteering can not take place until after all elements have been completed

Babes in arms are welcome to attend with you. There will not be any childcare available during the sessions, but we will try to accommodate those applicants whose older children will need to attend with them. You must be available to attend all training sessions in order to take advantage of this volunteering opportunity.

It will greatly assist your application if you are already (or have previously) used the services of your local Barnardo’s breastfeeding group.

We are looking for a minimum commitment of one year at a Barnardo’s peer support group after successful completion of your training and volunteers must attend at least one online volunteer update every 9 months.

Any places offered on the training course will be conditional on you accepting your role within a specified group and being an active volunteer of that group upon completion of your training.

If you have any general questions or queries about the process or training, please contact us.
